The Jaiñtia Students Movement (JSM) has called for a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the brutal murders of two teenage girls in East Jaiñtia Hills that have shocked the district and state.
In December an 18-year-old woman was murdered and her body dumped in a deserted location under Lad Rymbai police outpost. Then, on March 13, the body of a 17-year-old girl was found in a forested area under Khliehriat Police Station. Both victims are believed to have been raped as well.
Even 90 days on from the first crime, no one has been arrested in connection with the case, leading the JSM to demand a CBI investigation.
“The two incidents created a sense of fear and insecurity among the people of East Jaiñtia Hills district, especially young girls and women, as the Meghalaya Police have not been able to nail the culprit(s) of the first case and the second case happened within a period of 90 days, raising doubts in their ability and sincerity,” a press release signed by Leningstar Rymbai, the JSM President, said.
The group also wants a female Deputy Superintendent of Police to be appointed in East Jaiñtia Hills whose duty it would be to focus on crimes against women and girls. It also wants the creation of individual Crime Scene Investigation Units in all district police headquarters in the state and the appointment of female Sub-Inspectors in all police outposts and stations in Meghalaya.
