The Hynniewtrep Youths Council met with the new Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills, Shivansh Awasthi, to press for two demands of the pressure group – the holding of delayed District Selection Committee (DSC) exams and the need for a Chief Minister Youth Centre (CMYC).
The DSC examination, initially advertised in 2021 and readvertised in March 2024, has seen a prolonged delay, causing significant distress and uncertainty among thousands of youth who have been eagerly waiting for this examination, the HYC said. The council urged the DC to expedite the conduct of the examination, emphasising that prompt action will provide much-needed relief and opportunities for the aspiring candidates who have been preparing diligently.
In addition, the HYC requested the establishment of a CMYC in East Jaintia Hills. This initiative aims to benefit the youth, particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds who are unable to afford formal education or complete higher studies. The proposed youth centre would provide training in various fields of work and vocational skills, thereby creating employment opportunities and empowering the youth to become self-reliant.
The HYC also expressed concern over the spread of drug abuse among jobless, dropout and disillusioned youth in the district. The establishment of a youth centre would be a crucial step in addressing this crisis, it opined, along with the need for a rehabilitation centre.
The DC reportedly assured the HYC that the DSC exam will be held in August or September this year. He is also exploring all possible avenues to set up the CMYC as soon as possible.
