Shillong, Jun 25:The Power Department has intensified efforts to detect and prevent electricity theft, with officials carrying out regular inspections across the state and warning that illegal connections ultimately increase the burden on law-abiding consumers.
Commissioner and Secretary Sanjay Goyal said today that the department’s enforcement activities are conducted on a daily basis through a dedicated investigation wing that operates throughout Meghalaya.
He said while cases of electricity theft are not widespread, the department continues to act wherever violations are detected under the provisions of the Electricity Act.
According to Goyal, unauthorised use of electricity not only causes financial losses to the power utility but also affects consumers who regularly pay their bills.
“Those who are genuine consumers end up facing problems because of the actions of a small number of people involved in illegal practices,” he said.
The official noted that electricity theft results in a loss of revenue for the corporation and can add to the overall financial pressure on the power distribution system.
To address the issue, the department conducts inspections, identifies offenders and recovers losses by issuing compensation bills. Goyal said consumers found involved in power theft are required to pay these charges.
“We continue to monitor such activities and take action whenever violations are found,” he added.
The Power Department has also appealed to the public to report instances of illegal power connections, saying public cooperation will help reduce losses and improve services for legitimate consumers.
