Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has informed that proposed state medical colleges are progressing substantially and that the National Medical Commission (NMC) has been apprised that Meghalaya is now ready to operate one government and one private medical college.
She stated that they are in constant touch with the authority and are hand holding and encouraging discussions with the medical association of the state.
“We have also discussed this with NEIGRIHMS as they would give us the guidance and, in fact, two to three committees have already been put in place and we are constantly looking at space,” she said.
The state government will utilise the services of presently available government hospitals for the medical colleges.
Lyngdoh informed that the NMC is likely to visit Meghalaya very shortly. She informed that the government is targeting to start the Shillong Medical College by 2025-26.
Asked, the minister informed that the Vice-Chancellor of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has the Health Secretary to actively engage in the process of affiliation with the varsity.
