Shillong, Jun 18: The office of the District Medical & Health Officer (DM&HO), East Jaintia Hills district today launched the District Stop Diarrhoea Campaign under the theme “Prevent diarrhoea through cleanliness and proper use of ORS”.
The campaign aims to generate public awareness on the prevention and management of diarrhoeal diseases, particularly among children through improved hygiene and sanitation practices.
Speaking at the launch function held at the Ladrymbai Parking Lot District Immunization Officer (DIO) Dr. N. P. Suchiang stated that diarrhoeal diseases continue to affect people of all age groups, particularly children under five years of age and the elderly. She informed that a total of 5,990 diarrhoea cases were reported in the district last year.
She discussed a food poisoning incident in Narwan involving about 30 individuals stating that the cause was suspected to be the use of contaminated water in food preparation.
Dr. Suchiang emphasised the importance of immediate medical intervention, particularly in instances of severe dehydration or blood in stool. She recommended administering zinc tablets for 14 days as a part of diarrhoeal management in children. Notably, she pointed out that while antibiotics are often sought for treatment, proper rehydration using oral rehydration solution (ORS) is critical.
She further called on the community to enhance sanitation and hygiene practices to mitigate the risks associated with diarrhoeal diseases. Keeping surroundings clean and ensuring that drinking water is boiled before consumption are simple yet effective practices that everyone can adopt.
With the motive of educating the participants on effective hygiene practices, staff of Ladrymbai Urban Health and Wellness Centre (UHWC) performed a live demonstration on several proper handwashing techniques.
Others who spoke during the programme include Medical Officer, In-Charge, Ladrymbai Urban Health and Wellness Centre (UHWC) Dr. (Ms.) D. Sayoo and Block Programme Manager (BPM), National Health Mission (NHM), Khliehriat Block, Lastone Bamon.
