Images of flooding wreaking havoc in Guwahati have gone viral in the last day or so but neighbouring Ri-Bhoi has also been experiencing the effects of severe waterlogging.
Villages in Jirang constituency have been the hardest hit, with schools, homes and public spaces affected.
Several schools from Jorabat to Khanapara were forced to close as water inundated classrooms. This flooding has rendered it impossible for these schools to continue with classes.
In addition to the educational institutions, residential areas and public pathways have also been severely affected. The most impacted places include the areas along the road from Baridua to Umtyrnga.
In response to the crisis, Jirang MLA Sosthenes Sohtun along with officials from the block offices inspected affected schools and areas. The MLA has called on government officials to expedite the distribution of aid through the emergency relief fund to support those impacted by the flooding.
Nongspung B village, also in Jirang constituency, has experienced worse flooding due to nearby earth cutting, villagers say.
Heavy rainfall today flooded the road and submerged several houses and destroyed the residents’ belongings.
Meanwhile, several commuters had an additional headache after their vehicles suddenly broke down after being refueled at the Bharat Petroleum filling station at Umran Dairy today evening.
Upon the inspection of a mechanic, it was found that their fuel had been contaminated with water. The vehicle owners went back to the petrol station and police were called to investigate as well.
It was determined that the petrol pump owner had not properly secured the petrol storage tanks, allowing rainwater to mix with the fuel.
In response to the situation, the affected vehicle owners and the petrol pump owner signed an agreement in which the pump owner will cover the repair costs for the damaged vehicles.
