Shillong, May 20: The State government plans to hold a review meeting to address critical issues surrounding the ongoing construction of the Shillong-Dawki road, especially the frequent landslides that have been affecting the route.
Deputy Chief Minister in-charge PWD (Roads) Prestone Tynsong on Wednesday expressed concerns regarding the ongoing challenges posed by landslides along the route and said he recently met with officials from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) in New Delhi.
During the meeting, Tynsong said he stressed on the need for implementing protective measures against landslides to ensure both safety and efficiency in construction of the road.
It may be mentioned that the situation has drawn attention from the Meghalaya High Court, which criticized the construction work on the Shillong-Dawki road as “shabby and unscientific.” The court placed accountability on both the NHIDCL and the contractor, ordering a set of urgent safety directives to enhance quality and prevent further risks.
