Shillong, Oct 6: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday said the state government has initiated the process to set up the 6th Pay Commission.
“The process has started. I expect that within a week or two we should be able to formally announce the Chairman as well as the members of the Committee,” Sangma said.
He said the government is identifying a suitable chairperson and members for the committee and preliminary discussions are over. Notification for the commission will be issued in a couple of weeks.
The commission, once notified, will review the existing pay structure and recommend revised salaries for state government employees.
Meghalaya continues to follow the 5th Pay Commission, which was implemented in 2017 retrospectively from January 1, 2017. Prior to that, the 4th Pay Commission was implemented in 2007, indicating that the state missed the 2006 and 2016 revision cycles despite the Centre undertaking pay revision every 10 years.
Recently, the Meghalaya State Government Employees Federation met the Chief Minister and sought implementation of the 6th Pay Commission from January 1, 2026, pointing out that most other North Eastern states have already shifted to the 7th Pay Commission while the Centre is preparing for the 8th.
