Nongpoh, Oct 6: The Ri-Bhoi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has raised concerns over frequent power disruptions in various parts of the district, stating that the situation has been causing inconvenience to residents and affecting daily activities, education and livelihoods.
The party submitted a written representation to the Superintending Engineer of Meghalaya Power Generation Corporation Limited (MePGCL) at Umiam as well as to the Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi, urging the authorities to take immediate steps to address the issue.
Speaking to the media, BJP Ri-Bhoi president Sen Thabah said the party had received complaints from members of the public regarding frequent power interruptions.
The party also raised concerns over electricity bills, alleging that some consumers continue to receive high bills despite experiencing prolonged interruptions and periods without electricity.
“Ri-Bhoi produces electricity, yet people in the district continue to face difficulties with power supply,” the BJP leaders said, referring to the Umiam hydroelectric dam.
The BJP further urged the concerned authorities to examine the causes of the recurring disruptions and take appropriate measures to ensure a more stable and reliable power supply across Ri-Bhoi District.
