Meghalaya’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) share of animal husbandry, dairy and fishery sector is declining each year.
This was revealed in the data during the last four years prepared by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
As per the data, the percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) share of animal husbandry, dairying and fishery sector during the last four years is on the decline in Meghalaya.
The State’s GDP share of animal husbandry, dairying and fishery sector in 2016-17 was 3.88 per cent. It came down to 3.76 per cent in 2017-18.
The downward trend was also witnessed in 2018-19 when the State’s GDP share in this sector dropped to 3.52 per cent. Again in 2019-20, it slipped to 3.35 per cent.
The Central government is implementing various schemes for development of animal husbandry, dairy and poultry in various states including Meghalaya during the last three years and the current year.
These schemes include Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM), National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD), Supporting Dairy Cooperatives and Farmer Producer Organisations engaged in dairy activities, Dairy Processing and Infrastructure Development Fund (DIDF), National Livestock Mission (NLM), Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF), Livestock Health & Disease Control (LHDC) and National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP).
NITI Aayog while evaluating all the centrally sponsored and Central Sector components, observed that some of the schemes have made the difference at ground level in terms of increase in productivity, conservation of indigenous breeds and also income generation in the small, medium and landless farmers.
It also suggested realigning and revising the schemes across the scheme components and scheme as a whole to make all these schemes achieve the goal of sustainable development, employment generation productivity improvement and entrepreneurship-based modal.
Based on evaluation done by NITI Aayog, the Central government has revised and realigned some of the components of the existing schemes in order to have focused development of animal husbandry and dairying across the country in the next five years starting 2021-22.
