The Khasi Students Union (KSU) today raised its own ILP ‘check gate’ along the national highway 6 in Sonapur in its bid to check influx.
The check gate was later shut down by police, but not after the detection of 28 kgs of ganja.
According to the KSU unit general secretary, K.S.Suchiang the members had halted a Grand I-10 car bearing registration number AS 11 U 7010 for checking, but found packets of the substance.
He said three persons were inside the car and two of them managed to flee. The driver was handed over to police of Lumshnong police station and the ANTF team.
Police also confirmed the arrest of one person and the amount of the substance seized from his possession.
Meanwhile, the KSU in East Jaiñtia Hills is miffed at the government and said they will come up with their own stringent rules to curb influx if the Centre continues to delay in granting ILP to Meghalaya.
Suchiang said the state Assembly had passed a unanimous resolution in favour of ILP in December 2019 but there has apparently been no movement on the subject. “This clearly shows that the centre is not committed to address influx. Therefore the state government should put pressure on implementation of ILP, otherwise we will be bound to take up drastic steps to secure it,” he said.
The pressure group further demanded setting up of an infiltration check point at Tongseng or Sonapur. According to them, immigrants could easily get into the district without being detected in Ratacherra and Umtyra.
