Raj Bhavan, Shillong hosted a vibrant and dignified celebration on Friday to mark the Foundation Day of West Bengal.
The event, held at the Durbar Hall of Raj Bhavan, highlighted the rich cultural heritage and enduring contributions of the Bengali community residing in Meghalaya.
Chief Secretary Donald P Wahlang attended the celebration as the chief guest in the presence of several other dignitaries from various government and educational institutions.
Wahlang paid tribute to the values of unity in diversity and praised the contributions of the Bengali community in the socio-cultural development of Meghalaya. He also underscored the significance of celebrating such occasions in the spirit of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat”.
Commissioner & Secretary to the Governor BDR Tiwari recalled the historical context of the state’s formation and the deep-rooted connections between the people of West Bengal and Meghalaya.
A video screening on the Foundation Day of West Bengal offered insights into the legacy and progress of the state.
The event was enriched with cultural performances curated by the Department of Arts and Culture and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). Soulful bhajans by Paromita Paul from Shillong Music College, group songs by the Rilbong Sports and Cultural Club and Shillong Tagore Choir, and a vibrant dance performance by Gitanjali Dance Academy added colour and spirit to the celebration.
The celebration served as a reminder of India’s composite culture and the unique role played by West Bengal in the national narrative, especially in arts, literature, and freedom movement.
