Heavy and continuous rainfall since last night caused flooding in several areas of Ri-Bhoi in and around Byrnihat.
The floodwaters entered residential areas, homes and schools, completely submerging roads and making movement nearly impossible.
St Jude Higher Secondary School in Byrnihat was forced to declare a holiday as floodwaters not only filled the school compound but also entered the classrooms.
This kind of flooding is not new to the village, as similar incidents have occurred in previous years. The situation causes significant difficulties for residents, many of whom are unable to leave their homes to go to work or carry out daily activities.
Last year, local MLA Sosthenes Sohtun had provided assistance and support for cleaning and improving drainage systems. However, the current situation shows that, despite those efforts, the village is still prone to flooding.
