A devastating fire broke out yesterday afternoon in Umsmu village in Ri-Bhoi, completely engulfing a house and a stockpile of brooms belonging to Marrilin Mawlong.
According to Mawlong, the fire, which began at around 2pm, spread rapidly, reducing all assets and property to ashes before any intervention could be made. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined and no casualties have been reported.
Residents rushed to the scene in an attempt to douse the flames, but the fire had already consumed everything in its path. The brooms were a major source of Mawlong’s livelihood and villagers have appealed for assistance to help her out of this difficult situation.
