Shillong, Oct 14: Experts, researchers and policymakers will converge at the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) for a national symposium on ‘Energy and Natural Resources of North-East India with Special Reference to Atomic and Critical Minerals’ on October 15 and 16.
Discussions will centre on current scenarios, prospects, and challenges in the exploration and sustainable development of energy and natural resources in the region.
The symposium is being organised by the Department of Geology to commemorate 50 years of the Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD), North Eastern Region (NER).
Geo-exhibition showcasing ongoing initiatives and advancements in geoscientific research and exploration across the region will also be part of the programme.
Presentations will cover a wide range of topics, including critical and strategic minerals, socio-economic dimensions of mineral development, geospatial and AI-based exploration techniques, and emerging trends in geosciences. The sessions will also feature paper and poster presentations by research scholars and young scientists on diverse aspects such as uranium mineralisation, structural and geophysical investigations, hydropower prospects, and assessment of rare earth elements in the North East.
As part of the symposium, a geological fieldwork excursion to the Sohra–Shella road section on October 17 to provide participants with an opportunity to study field exposures and geological features significant to the energy and mineral resources of the region.
