Residents of Narpuh Elaka blocked traffic movement along the national highway 6 to protest against the deplorable condition of the road.
The closure was, however, lifted at around 4:30 pm following an assurance from district administration that the work order has been issued for construction on the damaged road.
The protest was being led by the waheh shnongs of 11 dorbars under the banner of the Joint Action Committee.
Additional Deputy Commissioner, G. Warjri met with the protestors and assured speedy repair of the road as the work order has been issued to the contractor.
Speaking to reporters JAC president Lasting Pala said the protest will resume if work does not start in four days. “If there is any delay to begin the repair we will be forced to shut the highway for 48 hours,” he said.
The highway has suffered extensive damage due to years of neglect. The ongoing rainy season has exacerbated the situation, turning the potholes into miniature ponds and mud traps.
The bustling highway, which also connects Assam, Manipur and Tripura have long been marred by the deplorable condition of the road that has not only become an eyesore but also a constant hazard for vehicles and pedestrians alike.
