Voice of the People Party (VPP) president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit has filed an FIR against a former MDC for allegedly making false claims against him.
According to Basaiawmoit, Don Sumer, who is now a member of the rival National People’s Party (NPP) accused him, during an election meeting, of misappropriation of funds while Basaiawmoit was the Chief Executive Member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
“The accusation levelled against me is false, baseless and incorrect,” the VPP chief stated in his FIR lodged at the Sadar Police Station here.
Such a statement in the public domain has cast aspersions and vilified his character even as he is an MLA, the complaint added.
“It is noteworthy to mention that such statements were made with the sole intent of defaming, maligning and spreading false, concocted and fabricated information to the public at large,” Basaiawmoit added.
The said statements amount to criminal offences under Section 499 and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code, the Nongkrem legislator informed police.
