Mawkyrwat MLA, Renkiton Lyngdoh Tongkhar along with PWD officials today inspected the collapsed bridge over the Umshangkhar river in Larem village.
The bridge in South West Khasi Hills that connects Mawkyrwat-Pariong to the national highway, collapsed yesterday when a truck loaded with iron rods was driving across it.
Lyngdoh told reporters that since the bridge was 50 years old it collapsed and that the early technique used for the construction cannot match the amount of vehicles passing through it in the present day.
He said since closure of the road is not possible a temporary arrangement would be made by construction of a sub-way.
It may be mentioned that the District Magistrate of South West Khasi Hills has passed an order under Section 144 of the CrPC to curtail overloaded trucks from using weakened bridges in the district after the incident.
There are a total of 25 weak bridges under Ranikor sub division identified by the district administration.
