The Courtyard by Marriott hotel in Jail Road will be opened shortly, with work almost complete on the project.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma took a tour of the building in Jail Road here today.
“I am very pleased and happy to see the kind of work that has happened,” he said in a video statement. “The entire infrastructure is just amazing.”
Courtyard is one of Marriott’s mid-priced hotel brands. Its readiness follows close on the heels of the launch of the five-star Taj Vivanta nearby.
According to the CM, this will be the largest hotel in the entire North East. The predominantly white building dominates the skyline of most of Shillong as it goes against the limit of four floors (G+4) that is imposed on most buildings in the earthquake-prone city.
Construction began in 2010-11 with the land being part of an agreement between the Urban Affairs Department and HM Cements. Work was supposed to be completed in two years, three months but the agreement was scrapped in 2021 after the private company defaulted on a loan. The government then signed a new deal with Maxim Infrastructure & Real Estate to complete the project.
