Shillong, Sep 11: An innovative project on carbon credits from bamboo forests was formally launched at a workshop held at the office of the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority.
Spearheaded by the Centre of Excellence for Natural Resource Management (NRM) and Sustainable Livelihoods, MBDA/MBMA the initiative is the first-of-its-kind project in the country focused on bamboo forest resources.
The project aims to provide direct monetary benefits to communities in Meghalaya through carbon credits while ensuring the sustainable management of bamboo forests. In addition to carbon revenues, the initiative will extend multiple co-benefits to participating communities, including livelihood support and opportunities for bamboo-based entrepreneurship.
As part of its broader vision, the Centre of Excellence under the Meghalaya State Bamboo Mission also announced the launch of a bamboo-based biochar carbon credit programme, further strengthening bamboo’s role in sustainability, agriculture productivity enhancement and climate resilience.
The workshop was attended by officials from MBDA, the Meghalaya State Bamboo Mission, and community representatives from Khasi and Garo Hills.
The programme was chaired by Dr. Subhash Ashutosh, Co-Chairman & Director, Centre of Excellence for NRM & Sustainable Livelihoods, MBDA/MBMA, and was also attended by Sachin Gavade Executive Director.
“This pioneering initiative is expected to serve as a model for integrating natural resource conservation with community-driven climate solutions across the country,” the authority said.
