Acting on specific tip-off, troops the 193rd Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya seized clothing items yesterday worth more Rs 20 lakh from the East Khasi Hills border with Bangladesh.
The clothing, saris specifically, were seized by personnel of the Barmanbari border outpost as the smugglers were attempting to cross into the neighbouring country.
On being challenged by the BSF, the smugglers fled from the spot leaving behind their head loads by taking advantage of the thick vegetation, darkness and undulating terrain. On searching the area, 15 bundles of saris were found. The seized items were handed over to Customs officials in Dangar.
