Acting on a specific tip-off on Saturday, personnel of the 43 Batallion of the Border Security Force (BSF) and Meghalaya police seized more than 11 tonnes of dry betel nuts worth Rs 24 lakh, which were to be smuggled to Bangladesh from India.
The joint operation was carried out in the general area of Dampukaphal under Rongra police station in South Garo hills. The betel nuts were being carried in three trucks when intercepted and confiscated by the BSF, although the drivers of these vehicles managed to escape.
The BSF applauded the Meghalaya police for their active participation in the joint operation and said such operations will continue in future also with an aim to have a crime free international border.
