      Jantar Revolt

The protest tents at Jantar Mantar have become difficult to miss. Since June 20, 2026, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has held the ground in the heart of New Delhi, and what began as an online meme has turned into the most visible youth mobilisation the capital has seen in years.

The CJP started as satire. A group of students coined the name to mock how easily systemic problems were brushed aside, “like cockroaches.” The government initially laughed it off. Within weeks, that joke became a movement. Students, coaching aspirants, and young professionals began showing up with one clear set of demands: reform the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), overhaul the education system, and seek the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities and the suicides linked to exam stress.

By Friday, the fast led by educator and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk had entered day 20. Crowds swelled daily. Placards, livestreams, and open-mic testimonies turned Jantar Mantar into a 24/7 forum on education, fairness, and accountability.

For the first month, the response from the Centre was muted. Officials called it a “limited agitation.” That changed on Monday with the “Chalo Sansad” march. Thousands walked from Jantar Mantar toward Parliament, making it the largest demonstration against the government in the capital in recent years. Police barricades went up, traffic was diverted, and for the first time ministers were forced to publicly address the CJP.

India is no stranger to big movements. The Narmada Bachao Andolan and the farmers’ protests proved that sustained public pressure can move policy. What makes CJP different is its demographic and its tone. This is a youth-led protest, digitally native, leader-light, and unafraid to name bureaucratic inertia and the influence of special interests on policy.

Whether CJP achieves its core demands — Pradhan’s resignation and a structural revamp of NEET and higher education — remains uncertain. But its impact is already measurable. The power of the movement lies in solidarity. When students who had never met shared stories of debt, repeated attempts, and lost years, the protest stopped being about one exam. It became about trust. As one speaker put it from the Jantar Mantar stage: legitimacy in a democracy rests on whether people feel heard.

That is the larger lesson CJP is forcing into public view. Institutions do not reform on their own. They respond when citizens organise, when apathy turns into presence, and when silence becomes too costly for those in power. The protest reminds authorities that public opinion, especially when it is young and networked, can still shape decisions.

The challenge now is continuity. Movements flare and fade. If young people stay vigilant, informed, and organised, they can convert outrage into structure — student councils with real power, grievance redressal that works, and testing systems that are audited publicly.

The Cockroach Janta Party may have begun as satire, but it has exposed something very serious: a generation unwilling to accept that their future should be decided behind closed doors. If that energy holds, the lessons from Jantar Mantar will not be forgotten. They will become the foundation for a politics where activism does not just protest power, but helps rebuild it.
