Director of College Development Council, NEHU Prof. Dr DRL Nonglait laid the foundation stone for the construction of a vocational training centre at Khadsawphra College in Eastern West Khasi Hills district.
Principal of the college, Boldness Lyngdoh Nongum informed that the college currently has four vocational subjects and the centre which will be constructed at Rs 1.25 crore will train students in carpentry.
He said the building will be equipped with machines, electricity and water connections.
Nonglait in his speech stressed on the need for vocational courses, especially carpentry, for students to stand on their own feet after completing the training which they have to complete in three semesters.
He congratulated the Khadsawphra College for taking this initiative to provide training to the students in this field and hoped that the centre would be at par with modern technology.
Nonglait also urged the college authorities to start postgraduate courses, especially professional courses in the coming years as and when the college is ready.
Vice principal Bakerphang War informed that the college offers vocational courses in Khasi Traditional Music, Desktop Publishing, and plans to introduce courses like Tourism, Fisheries, Fashion Design and others.
Beltestar Rani, Sordar of Mission Mairang Lawanpynshngain War, President of the College were also present on the occasion.
