A conglomeration of NGOs today led a protest in front of the NEHU Tura campus over the inability of the university to induct Garo students.
The AGHJAC also demanded an equal number of departments be set up in the Tura campus of the university as are in Shillong.
“We demand the alteration of previous admission to include all the justified students from Garo Hills. Due to the prevalent pandemic situation, those deprived students will not get admission in other states. All these meritorious students should be allowed to take admission for the academic session 2021-2022,” said AGHJAC convenor, Balkarin Marak.
He also demanded an increase in the number of seats in every department to match the increasing population in the state.
“The NEHU Tura campus must be allocated with more departments along with the existing departments,” said advisor, Rogerbenny Sangma.
The body also requested a “capable” local to become Pro Vice-Chancellor over the Tura campus in order to “address grievances of the students and bring positive change in infrastructure, regularization of staff, fill up all the vacant posts, to set up an examination centre and appoint of local guest lecturers, regularize all the contractual appointees, appoint deputy registrar and assistant registrar at Tura campus.”
