The Khasi Students Union (KSU) chased away around 50 ‘illegal settlers’ and seized drugs during its self-sanctioned surprise check last night in the city.
The pressure group said inspection was carried out near the parking area in Paltan Bazar (Cantonment), bordering Mawbah, Nongsohphoh, and Upper Mawprem localities.
During the inspection, the KSU said the settlers were illegally residing in the area without documents such as Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) or other valid documents.
The union said its members found intoxicants, including drugs and other banned substances, from what they described as highly unhygienic makeshift dwellings made of plywood and old boxes.
