The East Khasi Hills Local Taxi Welfare Association has sought action against individuals and private parties for renting two-wheelers, especially to tourists stating that they don’t have legal documents to carry out such business.
The association said that it is an act of injustice towards the local cabbies who strictly adhere and comply with norms laid down by Motor Vehicle Act 1988.
Meanwhile, the association has also urged the Deputy Commissioner, who is also the chairman of the regional transport authority, not to penalise commercial taxi owners and drivers if they fail to meet deadlines to pay for vehicle documents.
The association said that most of the staff of the District Transport Office have been assigned for election training and duties and hence cabbies were unable to make payments on January 21.
The association said that this has left cabbies perplexed because the next day they had to pay unnecessary fines for late payment, which is not their fault.
