A man accused for raping a 12-year-old girl was arrested yesterday, police said today.
North Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Swapnil Vasantrao said a case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
The police officer said the girl has been taken to a hospital for medical examination.
The incident which happened on December 27-28 was brought to light by the A·chik Indigenous Justice Initiative Forum (AIJIF) and A·chik Youth Welfare Organisation (AYWO), who have also condemned and sought legal action against the accused in its letter to the District Child Protection Officer.
Meanwhile, the organisations clarified today that this was a case of attempted rape after the suspected perpetrator had tied her by her hands and legs and sexually assaulted her.
Highland Post misinterpreted the joint complaint the two groups had filed with the District Child Protection Officer and reported that the girl had been “brutally raped”.
