The ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in West Garo Hills has found that most of the people of the district are undernourished along with nutrient deficiency disorders, the cause of which is ignorance about the importance of vegetables in their diets.
Noting that the concept of nutrition garden, which aims at continuous supply of vegetables to cater the daily needs of the family, should be introduced the KVK conducted a day long training programme on the importance of nutritional garden for food security in Aminda Rangsa village yesterday.
The programme was held under the leadership of Dr. Joyoshree Mahanta, CTO (Plant Pathology) which was attended by 53 farmers from across four different villages of Aminda Rasngsa, Aminda Simsang, Allabagre and Nengja Bolchugre.
Different problems faced by farm women in handling nutritional gardens were also discussed at length during the programme. Various kinds of nutritious vegetables seeds like red cabbage, beetroot, carrot, tomato, garden pea, french beans, spinach, lettuce, cole crops, chill, brinjal, dwarf dolichos beans, etc, were distributed to the beneficiaries under the project.
The farmers were provided with protrays for raising seedlings and yellow sticky trap to combat insect pests. The farmers expressed their gratitude to KVK for timely distribution of vegetable seeds and other inputs, which demonstrated the purpose of increasing nutritional diversity at the household level while also supporting income and rural development.
