The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) has warned the Chief Secretary of the Assam government that tensions could spill over if the Kutumba Suraksha Parishad (KSP) is not prevented from agitating over the ban on religious activities in a Meghalaya cave.
The KSP wants the ban on religious activities in Mawjymbuin cave in Mawsynram reversed. The cave is famous for its natural stalagmite, which is in the shape of a Shivalingam and, as such, would draw Hindu visitors to it.
Although Mawsynram is in East Khasi Hills, the KSP’s focus for its planned agitation is Ri-Bhoi, namely Byrnihat, which is the gateway to Meghalaya. The group had threatened to block the highways into and out of the state on December 24 if the ban is not rescinded, thereby crippling trade and tourism.
HITO said that such a threat by the group could have serious repercussions for the peaceful coexistence of communities in the region.
“It is crucial to emphasise that the Mawjymbuiñ issue should be resolved within the framework of the Dorbar Shnong, the traditional council that plays a pivotal role in the governance and dispute resolution among the Hynñiewtrep people,” HITO added.
They said that allowing the road blockade to take place could incite violence and unrest, particularly given the presence of numerous Hindu non-tribal residents in Shillong.
“To avert a potentially dangerous conflict and ensure the safety of all communities involved, we urgently request that you take decisive action to prevent this blockade from occurring,” the pressure group said.
