In worrying echo of what is happening across the border in Assam, an organisation has reportedly demanded that a school in Ri-Bhoi remove a statue of Jesus Christ and other Christian imagery from the premises.
Today, a conglomeration of community leaders, pressure groups and other stakeholders met the Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner to address their concerns over the demand.
According to them, an organisation calling itself the Karbi Traditional Faith Association (KTFA) held a meeting on February 25 where the demand was raised and the KTFA threatened to demolish the statue itself if the demand is not adhered to.
On the other side of the equation, the All Meghalaya Karbi Association (AMKA) is one of the groups that met the DC today concerned by the threats to Sacred Heart Secondary School in Marmain.
Expressing concern about the threat and the spread of posters on social media, the community leaders highlighted worries among residents. They fear this situation may disrupt the peace and tranquility in the area that has been maintained for many years.
In a complaint to the DC, the leaders condemned the interference of Sanmilita Sanatan Samaj from Assam, which had made a similar demand of Christian schools in the neighbouring state. The JAC urged the police department to investigate the KTFA leader, uncover the truth, and take necessary actions. They also requested the deployment of police personnel in the area to prevent any untoward incidents.
