The Mawthawpdah Presbyterian Deficit Upper Primary School was reopened today by a team from the South West Khasi Hills district administration, led by Magistrate KT Nongsteng and Deputy Superintendent of Police D Mawlein.
The school, founded in 1960, had been closed down “illegally” by a group of villagers from Mawthawpdah over a dispute of land and nomenclature of the school.
Immediately on opening of the school, the teachers and students were asked to occupy the building and to carry on their day to day classes. The situation was peaceful throughout the entire process and the Magistrate and DSP also spoke to the opposing villagers to inform them that the school should not be closed again arbitrarily.
