A dedicated office for the District Transport Officer (DTO) and Secretary of the Regional Transport Authority of Eastern West Khasi Hills was inaugurated today in Mairang.
Speaker of the Assembly and local MLA Metbah Lyngdoh inaugurated the building in the presence of Transport Minister Dasakhiatbha Lamare, cabinet minister Brolding Nongiej, Syiem of Hima Nongkhlaw PM Syiemlieh, senior civil servants, traditional leaders and others.
Lyngdoh expressed happiness that the DTO office was fast-tracked by the Transport Department. He also used the occasion to urge citizens to drive cautiously, keep their vehicles’ documents up to date and to abide by rules and regulations of the road to avoid accidents and casualties.
The Speaker also underlined the crucial role that taxes play to the welfare and development of the state and called upon citizens to ensure timely payment.
Lamare also emphasised road safety and urged the public to cooperate with the department by paying taxes on time, wear seat belts, use signals and indicators properly and not to drive while using their mobile phones.
Nongsiej, meanwhile, stated that the office will alleviate the problems faced by citizens of the district in accessing the services of the Transport Department.
The DTO will be assisted by a Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI), an Upper Divisional Assistant (UDA) and an Assistant System Engineer.
