Following the arrest of three local youth from Sabuda village who were arrested by Assam police, villagers today held a protest calling for their immediate release.
Yesterday, village leaders under Raid Nongtung in the disputed border area between Meghalaya and Assam, informed that three local youth had been arrested by Assam police from the Umpaklong area near the Umler River. They were identified as Barson Lawai, Standing Khriam and Dispar Mukhim, all residents of Sabuda.
Sources informed that the trio were taken to Ulukinchi for interrogation and were charged with trying to burn down the Umler Bridge.
The villagers said that Sabuda’s residents are simple farmers and are not involved in illegal activities. They condemned the Assam police for overstepping boundaries.
They called on the Meghalaya government to take a proactive role in bringing the youths back to Ri-Bhoi. Village elders want the case to be investigated by Meghalaya police and have requested the district administration to take up the matter seriously with the authorities in Assam.
