The United A’chik Youth Federation (UAYF) has written to Transport Minister Prestone Tynsong seeking the early completion of a PMGSY road between Shallang and Khalu via the village of Rengdim in West Khasi Hills.
The road in question, according to the UAYF’s letter on November 29, has remained incomplete for over a decade, leading to locals facing tremendous hardships.
“The road is slippery during the monsoon and almost impossible to travel by vehicle,” said UAYF president Ledison G Marak.
Some villagers need to travel close to 30km on foot to sell their produce in the nearest markets.
With most of the villagers occupied in agriculture and cultivation, the lack of a proper road has been a bane.
“Due to the road, no vehicles go into these villages, leading to villagers needing to carry their products by themselves to faraway markets like Shallang in West Khasi Hills and Jadi in South Garo Hills,” added general secretary Zimichryst G Marak.
“We seek your intervention into the completion of this road and its connecting bridges, which have remained incomplete for over a decade. The completion of this road will be a huge boost for the economy and provide relief to the people who are reeling under the poor conditions,” added the UAYF members.
