A ‘facilitation centre’ that will help keep track of visitors to the state was inaugurated at Mendipathar Railway Station by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today.
Such facilities have long been demanded by pressure groups to keep a check on illegal infiltration into the state. Mendipathar is the lone railhead in Meghalaya.
Inaugurating the centre, the CM said that the facilitation centre will keep a record of visitors from outside the region.
Sangma also hailed the railway station at Mendipathar, which, he said, has made the North Garo Hills town attractive for outside investment as it has superior transport links. The railway has also proved to be advantageous to the farming community of the region, he added, as it has given them “easy and cheap transportation and allowed them to access better markets.”
Because of this enhanced connectivity, the CM said that the largest food park in the state is being set up at the Mendipathar Industrial Area at a cost of Rs 100 crore. The biggest feed mill in the North East is also being set up here.
