The first death anniversary of HS Shylla, who was the former Minister and ex-CEM of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), was observed today.
Family members and the Shylla clan paid floral tributes at the cemetery of the Shillong Local Church in Wahkdait Laitkor followd by a prayer service.
Shylla won the Assembly elections in 1988 and 1993 and represented Nongkrem Assembly Constituency. He was also elected thrice as MDC (1984-1989, 2004-2009 and 2016-2019). He served as the CEM of KHADC twice.
He had also served as Deputy Speaker of the Meghalaya Assembly, a Cabinet Minister, the Chairman of the Meghalaya State Law Commission, the Co-Chairman of the Meghalaya State Planning Board, among others.
The ‘Ka Sur U Paidbah Ka Bri Hynñiewtrep’, a citizens group also paid tribute to Shylla, who was also its founding member.
Leader of the group, Thomass Passah recalled how Shylla created the group in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis, to help and assist the citizens of the states.
He said amongst the other things, Shylla worked for the betterment of the indigenous people of the State. “His last service to humanity was to bring home stranded citizens of Meghalaya from Chennai when the Covid-19 started.”
Passah listed Shylla’s dream to see the state gets ILP, solve boundary issues, inclusion of Khasi language in the Eight Scheduled, finalisation of Clan Bill, Land Bill, etc and said the group will pursue with the issues. “We are determined to follow up all these issues and see that these aspirations of our great leader materialises one day,” he added.
