The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) of South West Khasi Hills has joined the chorus that is demanding the upgrade of Mawsynram block to a civil sub-division.
Mawsynram is in East Khasi Hills but is on the border of South West Khasi Hills.
Stating that this upgrade will benefit 164 villages and a population of over 50,000, as per the 2011 census, KSU unit president Forwardman Nongrem lamented that this has been the aspiration of the people in the region for 20 long years.
He said that Mawsynram has been left stuck as a community and rural development block since 1962 and thoroughly deserves to be upgraded to a civil sub-division.
“The pathetic roads in the border area of the region, with a distance of over 80km to Shillong, are another factor where it is felt the administration needs to come closer to the people falling under the block that stretches over 510 sq km,” he said.
