The district administration of North Garo Hills has cracked down on interfering middlemen who allegedly were fleecing farmers by fixing prices of sale of agri-horti products.
In an order issued on July 9, the deputy commissioner, RP Marak said that information had been received by his office of some groups and associations who were fixing prices of agri-horti products and hence not allowing farmers to sell to traders at competitive rates. This has been happening mainly in the Dainadubi area.
Further the DC also noted that there were many money collection acts taking place at various points while the farmers were transporting their goods to the markets, resulting in huge expenditures for farmers.
The DC through the order stated that cognizance of such complaints had to be taken and ordered an immediate stop to such practises of price fixing and illegal collections from agri-horti products within the district.
Further the DC also asked the police department in the various parts of the district to closely monitor the situation and act against those with vested interests if they were found indulging in such acts. A monthly report on the matter has also been sought.
The order was issued under Sec 144 CrPC.
