Mawsynram MLA Himalaya Shangpliang today met Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to reiterate his demand to upgrade the area into a civil sub-division.
With Mawsynram located far enough away from the East Khasi Hills district headquarters of Shillong and isolated from Sohra and Ranikor civil sub-divisions, there is no other option, Shangpliang said.
“The Chief Minister agreed that Mawsynram should get the status of a sub-division,” the Congress legislator told reporters after the meeting.
The CM and Shangpliang studied a map to ponder the geographical challenges posed by the area around Mawsynram.
“The people living on the border (with Bangladesh) are facing difficulties coming to Shillong for official purposes. Mawsynram can’t be included in either Sohra or Ranikor civil sub-divisions. When we had a look at the map, we found that Mawsynram is cut off from both these areas and, due to this, it should be given the status of civil sub-division,” Shangpliang said.
The terrain, distance of the border areas to Shillong, poor road network and deficient communications connectivity are the key factors causing hindrances in the development of the area and a civil sub-division is the only realistic way of bringing the administration closer to the people, he had told the CM.
