      Jemino tests positive for Covid-19

Appeals to Govt to look out for common man

Ex-MLA Jemino Mawthoh has tested positive for Covid-19, he revealed to Highland Post today.

The sitting general secretary of the United Democratic Party (UDP) is undergoing home quarantine. He got himself tested yesterday after learning that he had come into contact with six people who had the virus.

“I have tested positive for the coronavirus with no symptoms and everything is going fine by God’s grace,” Mawthoh said. “I have isolated myself at home and we are monitoring everyone else. I feel it’s my responsibility to let others know about this and I have informed all those who have been in direct contact with me, so that they are alert, get themselves tested and take all necessary precautions.”

The UDP leader cautioned against panicking and said that everyone must be responsible in their actions to stop the spread of Covid-19. However, he said that those in power should make greater attempts to succour the poor at this time of lockdown.

“We also need a group of medical experts who will monitor what is going on in the entire state, in cities and rural areas, and update the information so that decisions can be taken accordingly,” Mawthoh added.

Even developed nations were hit hard by the effect of the coronavirus, so it is not so surprising that a developing country like India, which lacks in many areas, is suffering, he opined. “We have to look at the inadequacies and work out a plan and have a properly coordinated effort,” he added.

Mawthoh also stood by his criticism of last week’s lockdown in East Khasi Hills, which came into force only a few hours after the public got to know about it, leading to chaos in Shillong as people rushed to complete their shopping and other activities before the deadline.

“I’m not against the lockdown but the sudden announcement of the lockdown last time created panic among the masses and there was a mad rush everywhere and a long queue in the ATMs, shops, etc and the daily wage earners were the worst hit,” he stated.
