With 65 per cent of returnees to Meghalaya are testing positive, schools in West Jaiñtia Hills and West Garo Hills districts of the state will remain closed.
The respective district magistrates of the two districts have issued orders asking schools to shut down from April 28.
The West Jaiñtia Hills District Magistrate has directed all Nursery, Lower Primary and Upper Primary Schools within Jowai Town to remain closed from April 28 until further orders.
Similarly, the West Garo Hills District Magistrate has directed all schools and other educational institutions of Tura Town including St. John Secondary School, Chibragre and Auxillium inSecondary School, Alotgre to remain closed from 28 April to May 8.
In both the district, the ongoing board examinations conducted by the Meghalaya Board of School Education will continue.
“It has been stated that as there has been spike in positive corona cases from returnees coming from different States having lockdown and exponential cases; and also due to highly contagious nature of virus, it is necessary to break the transmission chain and necessary to put in place preventive measures so that the pandemic of COVID- 19 does not spread in the district,” the West Jaiñtia Hills DC said.
Meanwhile, all shops and commercial establishment shall close every day at 7 pm from Wednesday in Tura and all shops to remain closed on Sundays. Home delivery services and medicine shops are allowed to open.
