Around 82 per cent of the current new infections of Covid-19 in the state are among those below 45 years of age, Governor Satya Pal Malik was told at a consultative meeting today with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Health Minister AL Hek.
The meeting, to take stock of the Covid-19 situation in Meghalaya, was also attended by Director of Health Services Dr Aman War and National Health Mission Director Ram Kumar, who made brief presentations at the meeting.
The CM apprised the Governor about the current status with regards to the pandemic in the state and Meghalaya’s preparedness in terms of Covid-19 beds, ICU beds and oxygen facilities. He also elaborated on the strategies of the state government and Health Department in controlling the pandemic.
It was informed at the meeting that there is a higher positivity rate as compared to the previous three months and that around 1,200 of the 1,450-plus active cases are among those under 45 years of age. The Governor was apprised about the new rules for quarantine and home monitoring and told that vaccination is the only way to control the situation.
Sangma reportedly told the Governor that the state government “never let its guard down earlier this year”, despite the relaxed conditions and huge campaign rallies taken out in Garo Hills.
The Governor expressed his satisfaction with the current levels of preparedness and planning and he requested for consultative strategies to encourage greater levels of vaccination and to create awareness about it. He also suggested that for asymptomatic and mild cases home isolation and treatment could be provided to ease the pressure on hospitals. They could be provided home kits for monitoring and doctors could visit them at home.
