A legal awareness programme for paralegal volunteers, panel lawyers and workers from the unorganised sectors of the district was organised by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) of West Garo Hills.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Judicial Magistrate and Secretary of the DLSA, MK Lyngdoh, highlighted the objectives and importance of legal service to all unorganised workers and also informed about the rights and benefits it provides through government schemes and the need to disseminate this information among the workers regarding their entitlements and to provide counselling and assistance to all categories of unorganised workers for their registration with the concerned authority for availing the benefits.
Meanwhile, the Labour Inspector of West Garo Hills, Silte BM Sangma, explained in detail about the various social security schemes for workers in unorganised sectors, like education scholarship for children, marriage assistance, maternity benefits, disability pension scheme, old age pension scheme, etc, which are provided for registered beneficiaries under the Labour Department. She also mentioned the Equal Remuneration Act, Migrant workers Act and Minimum Wages Act 1948, which is an act to fix the minimum rates of wages for workers according to their skill and capability.
Furthermore, as part of the celebration of 75 years of independence, panel lawyer Debajyoti Baruah dwelt at length about the free legal aid and Free Legal Services Authorities Act 1987 and the Right to Children for Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009 during the programme.
