In the wake of the murders of two teenage girls within the space of three months, a group representing the headmen of East Jaiñtia Hills has reiterated their demand for the upgrade of Lad Rymbai police outpost to full-fledged police station.
The Synjuk Ki Waheh Chnong East Jaiñtia Hills lamented that the lack of manpower in the outpost means that officers cannot react promptly to emergencies.
In December an 18-year-old woman was murdered and her body dumped in a deserted location under Lad Rymbai police outpost. Then, on March 13, the body of a 17-year-old girl was found in a forested area under Khliehriat Police Station. Both victims are believed to have been raped as well.
Other unfortunate incidents they listed include the Mookhep firing episode in 2014, where two civilians were killed after police opened fire on a crowd of protestors, and the near fatal attack on social activist Agnes Kharshiing at Tuber Shohshrieh in 2018.
The headmen also mentioned that there are 55 villages under the outpost with a total population of over 30,000.
The headmen group had, in October 2020, first raised the demand to upgrade the outpost to a police station.
