A spat has erupted between Raid Marwet and the Sohiong Lyngdohship, with the former alleging that the latter has encroached on land under its jurisdiction.
On March 13 the Sohiong Lyngdohship organised a public meeting at Umtyrnga village to restore its traditions and culture through the Shnat Hima Nongwah Mawtamur but, Raid Marwet claims, this village is part of Raid Marwet, which is itself under Hima Mylliem.
Today the traditional head of Raid Marwet, headmen and village elders held a public meeting of their own to oppose Sohiong’s claim to any more villages. The meeting was also supported by the Meghalaya People Social Organisation and Garo Students Union.
Ken Syiem, the traditional head of Raid Marwet, said that the move by the Sohiong Lyngdohship could lead to law and order problems.
