The Meghalaya Joint Council of Trade Unions & Associations (MJCTU&A) has urged Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to intervene in the continuing transport strike of commercial vehicle drivers and owners and resolve the impasse through negotiation without hurting the general public.
The council has extended its support to the striking taxi drivers and others of Khasi-Jaiñtia Hills, who are striking for a reduction in fuel price and/or a hike in fares and relief from their 2020-21 taxes.
MJCTU&A General Secretary JL Das said that “in no case should a price rise in petrol and diesel and subsequent hike in taxi fares and transport charges should not be imposed upon affected common people, especially daily wage earners and labourers.”
These sections have already been hit by “continuous” inflation in the price of essential commodities before and after the Covid-19 lockdown. The council also urged the Meghalaya government to take action on the “skyrocketing” prices of vegetables, medicines and other items.
