Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday said there has been no explosion of tanks storing toxic effluents from the uranium exploratory mining in South West Khasi Hills district.
Sangma said that as per the initial report submitted by the district there has been no such leakage.
“The first day when this thing came out, we immediately informed the UCIL. We also inform the DC and SP and they have gone to those sites to survey the locations,” Sangma told reporters on Thursday.
Earlier, after an inspection at Nongbah Jynrin, the Khasi Students Union (KSU) had demanded the government to order for an inquiry into the alleged explosion of the uranium tanks and refused to accept that the explosion information was a rumour.
Meanwhile, the Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) of the district led by its president Arbok Kharjahrin met Deputy Commissioner Caramai Kharkongor and laid stress on the need to construct an enclosure for the tank and to ask the Uranium Corporation of India Ltd (UCIL) to repair the tank.
