Shillong, May 2: After days of navigating the winding, mist-covered arteries of Northeast, all-women drivers and riders who were part of the fourth annual Women on Wheels (WOW) car drive and the Northeast on Wheels (NEW) bike expedition gathered at Lok Bhavan here, to mark the end of a remarkable journey much more than mileage .
The expedition took the participants from high mountain ridges to vibrant community squares in local villages. Throughout their journey, these strong women engaged in meaningful conversations with local students and women’s groups. Under the shades of towering trees, they exchanged stories and learned firsthand about the sustainable traditions that have long defined the Northeast.
Supported by the National Commission for Women and the Ministry of Development of Northeast Region, the expedition which began on April 25, underscored that while the roads may be long and the hills steep, the bridges built between people are the most enduring landmarks of all.
The essence of the WoW and NEW expeditions lies in their ability to connect women from different walks of life, encouraging them to share their stories and experiences on the road.
During the closing ceremony, Meghalaya State Commission for Women chairperson Iamonlang M. Syiem highlighted the region as a beacon of unity in diversity and noted that the region is witnessing significant progress in areas such as tourism, connectivity, and entrepreneurship, with its youths and women emerging as role models across the country.
She tasked these women with a new mission: to return home as ambassadors and to tell the true story of the region’s vibrancy and the unity they found in its diversity.
Additional Chief Secretary to the Governor H.C. Chaudhary praised the Amazing Namaste Foundation for its efforts in organising the initiative, which passionately promotes the spirit of ‘Dekho Apna Desh’ acting as a rolling billboard for road safety and clean energy. His words underscored a larger vision: that the growth of India is inseparable from the growth and inclusion of its Northeast frontier.
The ceremony was punctuated by the rhythmic grace of Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia dances, a vivid reminder of the heritage the riders had spent the last week exploring.
The shared journey of these women on wheels not only highlights their individual growth but also underscores the collective aspirations for a vibrant future in Northeast, building bridges amongst various communities and inspiring transformative initiatives.
