More than 80 per cent of students who sat the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) supplementary exam passed, the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) revealed as it declared the results today.
The supplementary exam, held for the first time since 1993, saw 7,066 candidates sit the tests, of which 5,678 passed, giving an overall pass percentage of 80.35 per cent.
Candidates can access a detailed summary of the results on the MBOSE website at wmv.mbose.in.
The pass percentage for the main examination was 87.10 per cent. When combined with the supplementary examination results, the overall pass percentage for this year’s SSLC examinations is 96.02 per cent.
The high pass rate, unprecedented in Meghalaya, has partly been ascribed to the guidebook issued to students in the run-up to the exams. While applauded by some, critics felt that the guidebook dumbed down the examination.
The increase in pass percentage has also given something of headache to higher secondary schools and the Education Department as there are not enough seats to accommodate all those students who passed the Class 10 exam. The government had to race to ensure that more seats be created to deal with the surge.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma stated that the percentage is highest in Northeast and perhaps the best in the country.
Speaking at a function in Garo Hills, he said the guidebook is an intervention to support students who don’t have access to such guidebooks.
“I am extremely satisfied that our children’s have managed to pass SSLC exam. The guidebook has helped them immensely. I congratulate the students who passed the exam”, he added.
